Café Femenino Group of Colombia
Funded by: Café Femenino Foundation
Grant Requested: This project was requested by the Café Femenino Women's group of Colombia in March 2011.
Project Description: In December of 2011 the Café Femenino Foundation funded this project. It was requested by the Café Femenino women's group of Colombia. The amount requested was $5,300 to reconstruct 9 kitchens. Each woman was allotted $580 materials. The labor and additional materials were to be provided by each family so as to maximize the funding and to ensure the investment would be for the family.
This project focused on the health of the women and girls who are traditionally the main food preparers of the family. This project aimed to provide the resources for the women to have a safe, clean, and dignified place to prepare food and feed the family.
The new kitchens were built with ecologically sound methods in mind. Traditionally, in this area, the construction utilizes palm trees from the forest. These trees are beginning to become scarce because of this practice. The new building method utilized bamboo which is a resource that grows plentifully, regenerates quickly, and helps preserve the palms.
Another focus of this project was to install stoves that were properly ventilated to the outside thereby reducing the toxic smoke inside the kitchen.
The incidence of respiratory illness is very prevalent in women who live in rural areas due the task of cooking over stoves without ventilation to the outside. The harmful smoke fills up the kitchen and because the cooking duties traditionally fall upon the women of the family, they are several times more likely to become affected by respiratory illnesses.
Additional: The process of administering this project by the women was an important component to this project. The women's group handled the decision-making from start to finish. By meeting as a group, electing leadership, and agreeing on a methodology for the selection process, the women guided this process every step of the way. This component serves to advance the women and increase their leadership skills and abilities.
