The Cafe Femenino Foundation supports the women and families in coffee-growing communities.  In 2008, grants were sent to Bolivia, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Peru.  Read on for descriptions of the types of grants that CFF funded.

Three Wishes 2008

  1. $3,000 grant for the Dominican Republic: Provided funding for 55 children, ages 5-14 years old, whose families were devastated by Tropical Storm Noel. This helped these families to purchase school books and the uniforms that are required to attend school.
  2. $3,000 grant for Peru: Provided funds to help provide transportation and housing for parents of children that were helped by the work of the FACES Foundation that performed cleft palate surgeries, burn surgeries, and work done on other operable tumors or diseases that could be repaired or helped.
  3. $3,000 grant for Colombia: Provided funding to assist coffee farmers whose farms were harmed by chemicals that were sprayed aerially, intended to destroy Coca plants, but instead sprayed on coffee communities. The grant was used to provide assistance to the producers who were most effected by this spraying, and to help them re-establish their coffee farms and their family gardens.

Completion Of The Murojaga School

This grant request was to provide funding for the completion of a school in the community of Murojaga which is located in the most poverty stricken area of Peru. It provides funding for surfacing the walls, painting the walls of the school, buying desks for the children, shelving for books and the books to teach the children. Without this school there is little or no education for the children of this community which will continue the cycle of poverty.

Cuyes Breeding Program

Throughout most or the rural coffee zones in Peru the common diet of the culture is rice. There is a lack of diversity in food consumption, neglecting grain, vegetables, and protein. The raising of "Cuyes" (Guinea Pig) can cover a great part of lack of protein source for the family because it is high in protein and they are easy to raise.

Skill Development

The mission of this project is to enable women to improve the techniques and finishing of woven and embroidered products to be able to gain greater markets and to generate more income for their families.

Elevated Coffee Drying Tables

This project benefits 20 women coffee producers in Bolivia. The elevated drying tables improve the speed of the drying process, creating less work for the women and also improve the quality of the coffee. This happens by removing the coffee from generally wet and humid soils, which can affect flavor and quality. The project funds also directly benefit 80 women producer in trainings to increase their abilities in farm management, coffee improvement, organizational business management, including democratic values and social inclusion during assemblies, meetings and other areas of decision making.

A Coffee Child's Christmas 2008

CFF traveled to Peru in December to deliver hot chocolate, Christmas bread and simple toys to children in poverty-stricken coffee communities.

Other Grants Funded

The Cafe Femenino Foundation funded a grant request from this school of 75 children, located in the Andes Mountains, in the region of Lonya Grande, for equipment to be able to show training and educational videos, CD's, books and maps. Additionally it funded a youth organization that will develop activities that will involve the whole community.

The remote community of San Antonio is located in the Amazon region. The school was greatly effected by the past year of El Niño rains. The ceiling and floors were crumbling. The latrines were contaminated and needed to be replaced. This grant helped provide the funding to make repairs to this school so that the children can continue their education in a safer and cleaner environment.

This grant was to help women to improve nutrition and health by bringing clean water and power into their kitchens. The venting of smoke from cooking fires through the roofs of their homes and removing noxious fumes which contribute to many health problems, was also a key component of this grant.

This grant request for assistance was to help with young people, women and men, to provide technical assistance to help improve the economic strength of the cooperative as well as establish a quality control system for their production. This funding went to help 1,126 families.

The objective of this grant was to obtain greater involvement of young women and men in the integral knowledge of the cooperative. The goal was to fortify the organization through leadership training, capacity building, and self-esteem training. Not only does this improve and allow innovation for the organization but it also strengthens and builds future community leaders.
